With more 40 years of hotel experience, John Wagner has dedicated 37 of these to the extended stay sector and has been instrumental in the concept’s growth in both North America and Europe.
John began his career with the Marriott Corporation in 1976. In 1985 he was recruited by Jack DeBoer, considered the father of extended stay, to join Residence Inn as the brand’s first VP of sales and marketing and when Residence Inn was bought by Marriott in 1987, he was instrumental in helping the brand expand further across the US.
In 1997, while at Choice Hotels, he helped develop and launch its mid-priced extended-stay brand, Mainstay Suites, and in 2003 was recruited by IHG to evaluate its entry into the extended stay space in the UK and mainland Europe. John spent several years proving the concept and determining how a European version of Staybridge Suites might look, before implementing the brand roll-out in 2008.
John went on to create Cycas Hospitality 10 years ago which will have 14 properties (over 2,100 rooms) open across the UK and mainland Europe by summer 2018, with plans to increase this to 10,000 rooms by 2022. In spring 2018 John was recognised for his contributions towards the sector, winning the industry inspiration award at the Serviced Apartment Awards 2018.
